Jenson Button- Great on Paper, Poor on Track

The year 2000 saw the arrival in of a young man named Jenson Button to the most famous and lucrative form of racing, Formula One. After extremely successful spells in karting championships, Formula Ford and Formula 3000 he took his first drive in a Williams, then Benetton for the 2001 season and also in 2002 under their new name of Renault F1. From there he moved on to BAR in 2003 who have since been bought out by Honda, where Button remains. Despite eight seasons in F1, Button has won only one Grand Prix, the 2006 Hungarian race. Whilst those involved in the sport, and its fans alike, agree that he is an immensely talented driver, something has never quite worked out for Button.

The home crowd at the British Grand Prix will be hoping for a Hamilton win, with Button’s Honda at the back of their minds. The two drivers sit poles apart with Hamilton commanding odds of 5/2, Button must make do with an outside chance of 200/1 (from Blue Square betting). Whilst Button’s commendable patience and kind nature have seen him put up with such disappointing form, surely the time has come for him to put his foot down, as the main reasons for his failures have been to do with his cars. Honda speak tirelessly of aiming to challenge the fastest of the pack in McLaren and Ferrari, but their ambitions prove fruitless time and time again. And whilst they plod along with points finishes which saw them finish third as a team in 2006, last year’s car was terrible and the 2008 car is barely an improvement. Add to this the fact that BMW-Sauber have a greatly improved car and an excellent driver in Robert Kubica and Honda appear to be fighting a losing battle.

Button is, on his day, as good as Hamilton, Massa, Raikkonen and Kubica, but at 28 he has been racing for 8 seasons and one wonders how many more years of poor results he will put up with.  Once seen as Britain’s best racing talent, Button is now confined to the ‘could have been’ section of F1 hopefuls. One thing is for certain; Button is still a world class driver, leaving Honda desperately needing to improve their car if he is to get the opportunity he deserves. If they can finally deliver their promise of a car capable of challenging those at the top, we might just see a world champion in Jenson Button yet.
